Injury Time Winner Keeps County On Top

Andy Barrowman's last minute winner was enough to keep County top of the table as the odd goal in 5 sunk Airdrie United in a closely fought and entertaining game at Victoria Park. Both teams came into the match on the back of 4 straight wins but it was Airdrie who received an early boost when referee Stephen Finnie awarded the visitors a first minute penalty when he adjudged Tony Bullock to have taken man not ball as he dived at the feet of Allan Russell. Bullock thought he had made amends when he saved the spot kick, only for the rebound to be blasted into the net by Kevin McDonald. The Staggies responded well to the early goal and levelled after 25 minutes, Sean Higgins slipping the ball forward to Barrowman who calmly rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net.

With the score at 1-1 at half time and County shooting towards the Jailend in the second half the feeling was that the home side would push forward to secure the 3 points in the second half and on 55 minutes they duly obliged, a swift counter attacking move culminating in a Higgins cross being met by Stuart Golabek who had run the entire length of the pitch to score at back post. Golabek's reaction showed how much it meant to him and the team but the elation was short lived as Airdrie equalised 3 minutes later, a cross from their left being met by Stuart Noble who headed in the equaliser.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game but as the game drew to a close it looked as if the honours would be even but still County pushed on and their persistence was rewarded when the two substitutes Craig Gunn and Stewart Petrie (who had replaced the hard working Shields and Higgins respectively) linked up well down the right side before Petrie's cross found the unmarked Barrowman six yards out and the forward made no mistake as he sealed all 3 points with a deft header past Robertson in the Airdrie goal.

The win kept County 2 points clear at the top, but with two games in hand over nearest rival Raith and a six point and one game advantage over Airdrie in third the result is a big boost going in to Wednesday's Scottish Cup tie against Cove Rangers. Special mention must also go to Groundsman David Fraser and his hard working team, without whom the game couldn't have gone ahead after a week of frost and rain.
