Goals from Andy Barrowman and Iain Vigurs secured victory over
Queen of the South in the final of the Alba Challenge Cup at
McDiarmid Park in Perth, the fourth trophy since the Staggies
joined the Scottish Football League.
With the stadium bathed in glorius spring sunshine, County
started brightly and in just the 8th minute of the match Andy
Barrowman pressured Queen's keeper David Hutton into a mistake
before rolling the ball into the net to cue an eruption form the
1,800 Staggies fans accomodated in the Main Stand.
County could easily have increased their lead with several
efforts including a Richard Brittain free kick going close before
Iain Vigurs tucked away a Barrowman flick on at the far post to
double the lead 6 minutes before the break.
Although the second half was more even, County never really
looked like letting the Dumfries side back into it, and with full
time came jubilant scenes both on the pitch and in the stands. Andy
Barrowman was awarded the sponsor's man of the match award,
although in truth it was a true team performance.
Whilst the focus is now firmly back on ensuring First Division
survival in the remaining 5 league games, starting with the trip to
Partick on Saturday, it was a great day for everyone connected with
Ross County Football Club. A special thank you to all the fans who
helped make it such an occassion with their enthusiastic support
for the team.
