Further Cup success was enjoyed on Sunday at Victoria Park
as Ross County beat Partick Thistle to progress to the Final of the
ALBA Challenge Cup. It was another entertaining game
of Cup football in Dingwall and despite going behind twice the
Staggies once again showed great strength of character to take the
tie into extra time and eventually penalties.
Partick took an early lead on 8 minutes after Kinniburgh
was first to react following a great save from McGovern. It took
until the 52nd minute for Ross County to equalise,
but it was worth the wait, following a reckless challenge
on the edge of the box by McNamara, Scott Morrison smashed home a
well worked free kick that came straight from the training ground.
County were becoming increasingly dominant and came close to taking
the lead minutes later, but it was Partick that once
again went ahead on 63 minutes as Boyle followed up on a
deflected Robertson drive. Lesser teams would have crumbled at this
point, but County continued to push forward and with two minutes of
normal time remaining Andy Barrowman gave the 1300 strong
crowd something to cheer about as he calmly finished from close
range.
Extra time passed with chances for both sides, the best
of the lot falling to Partick's Liam Buchanan, finding
himself with only the keeper to beat, defeat in such circumstances
would have been hard to take, but another fine save from McGovern
denied Partick and the game headed to penalties.
Solid penalties from Brittain, Barrowman and Lawson
and further heroics from McGovern, pulling off two great
saves, handed Steven Craig the opportunity to put Ross County
into their third Challenge Cup Final in five years, he duly obliged
and the Staggies can look forward to another Cup Final, the date
for the diaries being Sunday 28th November.
Further details on venue will be confirmed in due course.
The away fixture to Stirling Albion on the 27th November
will be rescheduled.
