McMenamin was born in Glasgow but raised in Dumfries, at age 15
he signed school boy terms with the club he had watched as a
supporter, local side Queen of the South before being signed by
English Premier League club Newcastle United
He returned to Scotland on a free transfer to Livingston in
August 2002 enjoying three seasons with the club before being
snapped up on a free transfer in 2005 by Shrewsbury Town on the
recommendation of assistant manager Mick Wadsworth. McMenamin was a
first-choice regular with the Shropshire club, and was the club's
top scorer in the 2005-06 League Two season. He joined Gretna in
August 2006 on a free transfer, scoring his first goals for the
club in his second game, netting both in the 2-1 victory away to
Clyde.
His next move was to Dundee where he made 80 appearances for the
club but McMenamin was one of the players made redundant when, on
15 October 2010, Dundee went into administration for the second
time in seven years.
Manager Kenny Brannigan took him to Queen of the South were he
proved popular with the fans and following an initial period as a
trialist he signed terms until the end of the season.
In the summer of 2011 he jumped at the chance to join the
Staggies.
