Livingston youth product who progressed to the seniors in 2002 before skippering a side who contained now-County manager Derek Adams. He was loaned out to Raith Rovers in 2003 and in July 2006 moved to SPL side St. Mirren on a free transfer. Scored a memorable goal against Rangers on 30th December 2006, but was released by St. Mirren in May 2008. Signed for County the following month and graduated to the captaincy after Stuart Golabek's return to Inverness CT. Rarely out of the side, Brittain is valued for his thrusting runs and dead ball expertise.
