As the full time whistle blew at the Global Energy Stadium, it was 4 wins from 4 as the Staggies made it through to next round of the Betfred Cup. Following wins over Montrose, Brechin City and St Johnstone the last match in the group stage saw Ross County welcome Forfar Athletic to Dingwall.
The first half of the match definitely got fans on their feet as County produced wave after wave of attack with the forward players all causing threats to McCallum’s goal. Michael Gardyne had the best of the early chances. He latched on to a cross-field ball from Blair Spittal, twisted and turned his defender before getting a shot away. His shot narrowly going over the bar.
15 minutes in the Staggies took the lead. Michael Gardyne received the ball on the edge of the box, his shot was deflected but alert was Brian Graham who managed to get a touch and direct it beyond McCallum and in to the Forfar net.
County doubled their lead and killed the tie with 15 minutes remaining. Marcus Fraser crossed the ball to the back post from the right, Graham managed to get above his defender and headed back across goal, giving the Forfar keeper no chance to get to it.
It could and should have been 3-0 only 47 seconds later were in not for the alert Forfar defence. Graham found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat from 10 yards. As the ball got wedged under the body of Goalkeeper McCallum, it feel to the feet of Simon Power with the easiest of jobs to tap it home however two Forfar defenders managed to get back on to the line and clear for a corner.
As the game came to a close it was 12 points from a possible 12 from Group B and Ross County are now in to the next round of the competition they won only 3 years ago.
