From the Windy City to the Highlands: A Journey to Ross County FC.

It is a privilege to share a few reflections following our visit to Dingwall for the match against Dunfermline Athletic on March 21st. Our family traveled all the way from Chicago to visit relatives in the area, and we knew that a trip to the Global Energy Stadium was an absolute necessity. This match marked a special milestone for us: it was the very first taste of Scottish football for my children, and we could not have asked for a more authentic or welcoming introduction to the beautiful game in Scotland.

Heartfelt Highland Hospitality

We must express our deepest gratitude to Head of Children's Academy & PDP Lead Ryan Farquhar and the entire Ross County staff for the exceptional hospitality shown to our family. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and professionalism were second to none. It is rare to find a club that balances top-tier operations with such a genuine, personal touch, making visitors from across the Atlantic feel like a part of the Staggies family.

The Fighting Spirit

Watching the squad from the stands, it is clear that the club is in the hands of a manager who understands the "fight" required at this level. The passion and tactical commitment on display were inspiring. It is evident that the manager and the squad has enough talent to get the points needed to get out of the relegation zone in the remaining matches. The pace and positioning of Kieran Phillips served as the primary catalyst for County’s offensive transitions. Phillips’ ability to exploit the half-spaces and stretch the Dunfermline backline was vital; his finishing was a masterclass in composure, proving that when the service is precise, his clinical instincts are among the sharpest in the league. Complementing that agility was the relentless physical presence of Uche Ikpeazu. His "big man" play provided a focal point for the attack, successfully pinning center-backs and creating second-ball opportunities for the midfield. Ikpeazu’s capacity to shield the ball under pressure allowed the team to sustain territory in the final third, effectively disrupting Dunfermline’s attempts to build from the back. At the heart of the shape, the leadership of Declan Gallagher was instrumental. Beyond his individual aerial dominance, Gallagher’s organizational communication ensured the backline remained compact during periods of sustained pressure. His veteran presence provided the necessary stability to manage the game’s tempo, acting as the defensive anchor that allowed the wing-backs the freedom to push higher up the pitch. This blend of raw pace, physical grit, and experienced leadership underscores the competitive culture being fostered here in Dingwall.

Ross County is more than just a football club; it is a blueprint to success in community integration. Seeing a club so deeply rooted in its local identity is inspiring. Whether it is the engagement on matchdays or the presence of the club throughout the region, the Staggies serve as a vital heartbeat for Dingwall and the surrounding highlands.

Admiration for Youth Culture

Perhaps most impressive to us, though, is the culture fostered within the Ross County Youth Academy. Having observed the training environments and the dedication of the youth coaches, we were struck by the focus on character development as much as technical ability. The academy doesn’t just produce players; it nurtures young people within a framework of discipline and local pride. As a coach myself, I found the commitment to the next generation to be world-class.

Thank you once again for an unforgettable visit. We return to the States with incredible memories and a new lifelong bond to the Highlands. We are already hard at work planting the seeds for an official Chicago-based Ross County fan club to ensure the Staggies have a loud and proud voice in Chicago.
