Hylton "anything is possible"

21/01/2021

Jermaine Hylton grew up idolising Steven Gerrard, but the winger will be hoping to spoil his hero’s afternoon when he faces up against the ex-Liverpool captain’s Rangers side on Saturday at Ibrox.

Hylton spoke to us yesterday morning to preview County’s visit to Glasgow:

“These are the kind of games where it’s almost a free hit. We go there with a belief that we can go get a result but there’s not too many others in the country that are expecting a result.

“If we can get something out of it, we can say ‘yeah that’s what we wanted to get from it, that’s what we went there for’ but if we don’t, everyone will say ‘well they were never going to get a result anyways’ so it’s like a win-win almost. At the end of the day, we’re all playing in the same league, so anything is possible.

“Any game that I can play in personally, I’m going to do what is asked of me tactics-wise so we will just see what happens and I’ll try and do the best whichever way we set up.”

In 2005, Hylton could be caught dancing in the streets of Birmingham in celebration of Gerrard’s Liverpool winning the UEFA Champions League, but could the winger replicate these celebrations at the weekend, this time at the expense of his childhood hero. He said:

“I’ve been a big Liverpool fan since I was about 8 or 9, I knew absolutely nothing about the game and just supported them because all my friends did, and it stuck.

“He (Steven Gerrard) has always been someone I looked up to obviously. I remember the champions league and we’ve gone to Milan and when I came back, I was running outside, top off, flying down the road in the middle of the night. He (Gerrard) has been massive in my household and it’s always nice to go and challenge yourself against people you live up to.”

The Englishman is also looking forward to facing directly up against the Rangers captain and right-back, James Tavernier. Tavernier has been one of the league’s stand-out players this season, racking up 11 goals and 8 assists in just 24 games from right-back. He said:

“He (James Tavernier) is in real good form at the minute but those are the kind of players you want to test yourself against, those are the kind of battles you look forward to.”
