Match Preview | Motherwell v RCFC

15/05/2021

Ross County will travel to Fir Park on the final day of the season to face Motherwell in a match which will determine the Staggies’ Scottish Premiership fate.

Just 1 point from the match will guarantee safety for John Hughes’s side as they look to avoid slipping into the treacherous 11th place relegation play-off position.

Opposition Focus

Motherwell have been transformed under new manager Graham Alexander since he took charge of the Lanarkshire club in January.

The Steelmen were battling relegation when Alexander came in, but they have now climbed to as high as 7th in the Scottish Premiership table. As long as they can match, or better, the results of Dundee United and St Mirren, who play against each other, Motherwell will finish the season at the top of the bottom-half league split.

The Well are unbeaten in 9 of their last 11 matches and have not lost a match in 90 minutes since their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock in March! They have scored in each of their last 10 matches and have scored more goals than every team in the bottom half of the Scottish Premiership this season, other than Kilmarnock.

Despite their impressive form, Motherwell were held to a draw by Dundee United at Tannadice during midweek. The Steelmen came from 2 goals behind to salvage a point, thanks to goals from Chris Long and Devante Cole.

Ross County Focus

We all know the task Staggies. We all know what is at stake. We all know what is required.

One final push. One final battle. One final point.

A draw or a victory against Motherwell will guarantee top-flight football next season and will extend our most recent stay at the top table of Scottish football to a minimum of 3 seasons.

Likewise, if Kilmarnock drop points to Hamilton, County will automatically be safe from relegation to the Scottish Championship.

However, if County lose and Killie win, the Staggies will finish the season in 11th position and will be forced to play a 2-leg play off match against the winners of the Scottish Premiership promotion play-off semi-final.

During midweek, John Hughes’s side took an enormous leap towards league safety with a 2-1 victory over Hamilton Academical. Goals from Blair Spittal and Charlie Lakin moved the Staggies 3 points ahead of Kilmarnock in 11th place and all but relegated the visitors Hamilton, who now need to beat Killie by 9 or more goals to avoid automatic relegation.

Last Match

Ross County were defeated 2-1 by Motherwell at the Global Energy Stadium in the last encounter between the 2 sides in January. Oli Shaw opened the scoring for the Staggies in the 14th minute before Graham Alexander’s men found goals from Devante Cole and Bevis Mugabi to give the Lanarkshire club their first win in the Scottish Premiership since Halloween.
