Match Preview | Motherwell v RCFC

09/01/2023

It’s all to play for at Fir Park next weekend with just three points separating Ross County & Motherwell. With the tight, congested nature of the cinch Premiership this could be a key fixture in what remains of the 2022/23 campaign.

TEAM NEWS

It will be as you were for Malky Mackay as he will have the same pool of players to pick from as at his disposal last weekend.

Yan Dhanda will be looking to return to the squad after missing out against Livingston due to a small knock earlier last week. Ben Purrington and Alex Samuel remain the only long-term absentees for The Staggies.

TALE OF THE TAPE

The first meeting of the two earlier this season ended up in a 5-0 victory for Saturday’s opponents. A crazy 10-minute spell after the break saw Motherwell score three to put the game beyond County’s reach after a first half strike from Kevin Van Veen who also tied the game up with the 5th goal at the death.

Meetings last season were crucial for Ross County. A 2-1 defeat at Fir Park early in the campaign was wiped away with a 3-1 home victory over The Steelmen in Dingwall at the turn of the year in to 2022. The final meeting would be decided by a Joseph Hungbo penalty that would push County towards a Top Six berth.

THE OPPOSITION

Like Ross County, it has been a challenging season for Steven Hammell’s side. Motherwell sit only 3 points above County having won one match more at this point.

The Steelmen currently sit 6th in the goals scored table with 25 league goals scored, with that they have conceded only 31 (only Celtic, Rangers, St Mirren and Livingston have conceded less). Kevin Van Veen currently sits 5th in the Golden Boot race with 9 goals in 20 league matches. However, Callum Slattery has picked up the most bookings in the league this year.

Motherwell have only won 1 home match so far this season and County will look to that as they travel down the A9.
