MATCH PREVIEW | Ross County v Dundee United

12/10/2022

Malky Mackay will be looking to build on a hard-earned 3 points at Livingston last weekend when Dundee United come calling to Dingwall on Saturday afternoon. Encounters between the two clubs have been tight, fraught affairs in recent years and its set up to be another battle in the Highlands on matchday.

TEAM NEWS

The good news for County is that no new injuries have been added to the list. Connor Randall continues his rehabilitation on leg fracture as do George Harmon and Alex Samuel.

LAST SEASON

Tense, tight and narrow margins- those are the three things guaranteed when these two teams meet in the cinch Premiership. Last season three of four meetings were decided by a one goal margin, all in the way of our opponents from Dundee. The other meeting resulting in a 1-1 draw in Dingwall.

Ilmari Niskanen scored the only goal of the game in October last year as Dundee United claimed 3 points in the City of Discovery. That was followed up by a tantalising 1-1 draw in Dingwall where Appere had put the visitors ahead before Harry Clarke was sent off for The Staggies. Jack Baldwin rescued a point for County in the 93rd minute ensuring a share of the spoils for Malky Mackay’s side.

The final two meetings would end in 2-1 victories for Dundee United. The first being a victory at Tannadice, where Nicky Clark scored a late double to overturn Regan Charles-Cook’s opener for County. The last meeting of the campaign came on the final day of the 2021/22 cinch Premiership campaign. Blair Spittal opened the scoring from 25 yards with a fabulous strike to put County ahead before again Nicky Clark notched a late double to turn the game around.

THE OPPOSITION

The stats show how evenly matched both sides are going in to this one. Both teams have played 10 matches- won two, drawn two and faced defeat on six occasions, with both teams also having the same goal difference.

It was a challenging start to the season for the Tangerines with Tam Courts departing for Hungary leading to Jack Ross being installed as the new Manager at Tannadice. His reign was short-lived, and he would eventually leave Dundee United following a 9-0 defeat to Celtic. Liam Fox, who had been in Caretaker charge has now been handed the reigns on a permanent basis and although they had failed to win any of their 8 opening games, a 4-0 home win over Aberdeen followed by a 1-0 home win over Hibernian 4 days later has seen United close the gap on the teams above them, including County.
