MATCH PREVIEW | Ross County v Motherwell

07/09/2022

Its back-to-back home games for Ross County as we welcome Motherwell to the Global Energy Stadium this Saturday.

Malky Mackay’s side won two of last season 4 meetings with Motherwell including a 1-0 midweek win at Fir Park in the lead up to a Top Six finish.

TEAM NEWS

County will continue to be without Alex Samuel & Connor Randall who are long term absentees. George Harmon will also be out for County as he begins his recovery.

William Akio made an incredible return to the Staggies team last weekend notching his first goal on his cinch Premiership debut.

LAST SEASON

It was very much split between the two clubs last season with both teams claiming two win each. The early season encounter at Fir Park kept all 3 points in North Lanarkshire with Tony Watt scoring an injury time winner to give Motherwell a 2-1 victory.

The next two matches would go the way of the Staggies. Firstly, a 3-1 home win in Dingwall, where after Jordan Tillson was sent off, County would go on to make the 10 v 11 work to their favour with Regan Charles-Cook bagging a double on the night. This was followed up by a midweek 1-0 win at Fir Park for County, where Joseph Hungbo’s penalty would give Ross County the chance to go on and claim a Top Six spot if they could secure a win at Pittodrie in their next game against Aberdeen.

The final meeting would be in the split with both teams vying for European Football. Kevin Van Veen converted a controversial penalty in the 68th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 victory which would all but secure 5th place in the league.

THIS OPPOSITION

A short European run would ultimately pay the price for Graham Alexander who left the club before a ball had been kicked in league action. Alexander has since been replaced by Motherwell legend Steven Hammell, who has guided the club to 10 points from their opening 6 league fixtures. Most notably securing wins away at St Mirren and Aberdeen along the way.

Motherwell have also secured a place in the quarter finals of the Premier Sports Cup following a 4-0 comprehensive win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the last round.

The visit of Motherwell will see a return to Dingwall for Blair Spittal. The midfielder moved on after 3 years in Dingwall, where he made 72 appearances, scoring on 12 occasions. Blair was a vital part of Ross County’s success last season, with Ross County securing a Top Six place for only the third time in the club’s history.
