MATCH PREVIEW | Ross County v Motherwell

02/10/2022

It’s the second of three games in a week for County as we welcome Motherwell to the Global Energy Stadium on Tuesday evening.

TEAM NEWS

Following Saturday’s match in Dingwall there have been no new additions to the injury list which will please Manager Malky Mackay given the hectic schedule ahead of the Winter Break.

Connor Randall, George Harmon & Alex Samuel remain out as long-term absentees for The Staggies.

LAST SEASON

Matches against Motherwell were evenly split last season. An early season defeat at Fir Park was one of many tight defeats in a run that saw County go 10 without a win early on. Regan Charles-Cook had levelled for County after Slattery’s sensational opener at Fir Park; however, Tony Watt would pop up with a winner late on the seal the three points for Motherwell.

County would then win the next two meetings. A 3-1 win in mid-January was part of a strong month for Malky Mackay’s side. After an own goal put The Staggies ahead at the break, Jordan Roberts equalised for Motherwell just before the hour as County also had Jordan Tillson sent off. This would not deter a Ross County side on the rise who went on to score a further two goals through Charles-Cook with only 10-men. This would be coupled with a vital 1-0 win at Fir Park just weeks later, where Joseph Hungbo would step up and convert from the penalty spot to keep County in the mix for a top six place.

The final meeting came in Dingwall during the split. A Kevin Van Veen penalty in the second half effectively ended County’s chances of European Football in a tense affair at the Global Energy Stadium.

THE OPPOSITION

Already it has been a period of transition for The Steelmen- with the departure of Graham Alexander before the first league match and the appointment of Steven Hammell.

Motherwell only sit one place ahead of County in the league, however, sit 5 points ahead after taking 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 defeats from their opening 8 fixtures. Both Ross County and Motherwell come in to Tuesday night’s clash on the back of defeats with Motherwell losing out to Champions Celtic in their last outing whilst Ross County will be looking to respond to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Hibernian.

The Steelmen also added key experience to their ranks in the summer with Paul McGinn and former Staggies midfielder Blair Spittal joining the Fir Park side. This was coupled with the return of Motherwell Cult hero Louis Moult and former Academy Graduate Stuart McKinstry, both of whom have had positive track records at Motherwell earlier in their careers.

THE QUOTES

“You don’t want to be waiting a week to put it (Saturday’s defeat) right, so Tuesday night out here we obviously have another big task on our hands, but one we will look forward to and it’s a chance to put things right definitely.” Jack Baldwin, Ross County FC.

“The boys are desperate to get back out there and make amends so that’s all credit to them. We’ve got to go out there on Tuesday night and make sure we give a good account of ourselves.” Malky Mackay, Ross County FC
