Ross County came from behind to earn a point in a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen at the Global Energy Stadium this evening.
Jonny Hayes gave the visitors the lead shortly after half time, but the Staggies were quick to respond when Ross Callachan’s superb equaliser found the net just 4 minutes later.
Stephen Glass’s Aberdeen certainly dominated possession and territory in the first half, but his side failed to create any clear chances that would worry the County rear-guard.
Lewis Ferguson and Chrisitian Ramirez had early headers comfortably saved by Ross Laidlaw. Then both Ferguson and Funso Ojo had attempts from the edge of the box fail to beat Ross Laidlaw as Aberdeen continued to mount pressure.
However, it was the Staggies that had the first real chance of the game when Regan Charles-Cook was able to break with the ball from a counterattack. The winger’s resulting cross was saved by Joe Lewis, but the ball spilled to Jordan White who looked to follow up the rebound from close range. Unfortunately, White could not grab his first goal against the Dons as his effort was well cleared off the line.
Malky Mackay would have been please to enter half time on level terms in the hope of reinvigorating his seemingly fatigued County side.
Just 3 minutes after the restart, the Dons took the lead through Jonny Hayes. Skipper Scott Brown picked up the ball in the centre of the park before sliding the ball through to Jonny Hayes on his left. Brown’s former Celtic teammate then burst towards goal and slapped the ball into net to put Stephen Glass’s side 1 up at the beginning of the first half.
Thankfully, Aberdeen’s lead did not last long after a stunning Ross Callachan strike gave the Staggies an equaliser in the 52nd minute. Regan Charles-Cook skipped inside of Calvin Ramsay before his subsequent shot was blocked by the youngster. However, the following deflection spun to Ross Callachan on the edge of the area who connected with a well-timed volley and sent the ball into the far left corner.
With 10 minutes to play, Funso Ojo nearly converted with a backheel attempt from a corner, but his inventive effort was prevented from finding the net on the line by Harry Paton.
5 minutes before the final whistle, substitute Harry Paton had an opportunity to win the game for the Staggies. Connor Randall met the ball to the right of the box and dug out an excellent cross to find the Canadian’s feet in the area, however Paton’s great turn was succeeded by a weak left-footed effort at goal which was easily gathered by Joe Lewis.
Malky Mackay’s County are now just 3 points behind Livingston in 9th position in the cinch Premiership as his side look to focus their attention onto a relegation showdown with 12th-placed Dundee on Saturday. A win at the weekend will open up an 8-point gap between the Staggies and the foot of the table.
