Looking back at County facing Aberdeen

11/12/2020

Ross County travel to the North East this weekend to face Aberdeen. The Scottish Premiership’s two most northern clubs will face off for the 25th time as both sides are looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing results.

Let’s take a look at some of our favourite clashes between the sides from over the years:

Ending the drought- February 22, 2020 (2-1 Win)

The last time the pair met, County beat the Dons for the first time in four years in a dramatic trip to Pittodrie in February. Curtis Main opened the scoring for the hosts before teenage midfielder Dean Campbell was shown a second-yellow card for impeding a free kick. A Billy McKay header on the stroke of half-time saw County enter the break level. McKay then doubled his tally with just two minutes to go to clinch all three points for the Staggies. This win lifted them eight points clear of the dreaded relegation play-off spot.

County in Europe? – October 16, 2015 (2-0 Win)

The Staggies completed the double over Aberdeen in the 2015/16 season, beginning with a 2-0 home win in October. Paul Quinn assisted Brian Graham twice as the striker’s brace raised County to third in the league, holding one of the three coveted European positions! The result meant that the league-leaders, Aberdeen, had lost their third consecutive league match and third placed County had reduced the gap between the sides to just six points.

Dominating the Dons- May 15, 2016 (4-0 Win)

County then visited Pittodrie 7 months later to record their second win over Derek McInnes’s side that season on the final day of the season. Although the result would not impact any league standings, the match came to life as the league cup winners hammered Aberdeen in a record-breaking victory. Goals from Brian Graham, Alex Schalk, Liam Boyce and Martin Woods handed County their largest ever win over Aberdeen to conclude the club’s most successful season in their history.

County defeat national heroes- December 17, 2016 (2-1 Win)

Later that year, 10-man County shocked Aberdeen in yet another dramatic 90 minutes of football in the Highlands. Talisman, Liam Boyce, put County ahead after 26 minutes before Niall McGinn replied with an equaliser mid-way through the second half. However, in the 82nd minute, Kenny van der Weg was brandished a red card by referee Craig Thomson for a lunge on Jonny Hayes. With a man down and just 8 minutes left on the clock, County were content with holding out for a draw. But Ryan Dow had other ideas… The substitute’s guided header from an Andrew Davies knock-down clinched the victory for County with 2 minutes to go as they extended their unbeaten run in the Premiership to six matches. The defeated Aberdeen side that day included Scottish National Team heroes Ryan Jack, Kenny McLean and Andy Considine, as well as current England international James Maddison.

The hosts have the current bragging rights after a 3-0 win at the Global Energy Stadium in September, but County will be looking to avenge the loss at Pittrodrie on Saturday.
