Over the Years: Celtic

22/12/2020

John Hughes will take charge of his first game as Ross County manager tomorrow when the Staggies face Scottish Premiership champions, Celtic, at Celtic Park.

Hughes, who played for Celtic during the 1995/96 season, will hope his side can rediscover the level of performance that knocked Celtic out of the Betfred Cup last month.

We all know what happened last time out… so here are 5 of our favourite matches between Ross County and Celtic from over the years:

April 10, 2010 (2-0 win)

In 2010, Ross County famously knocked Celtic out of the Scottish Cup as the Staggies reached their first ever Scottish Cup final. Derek Adams’ men pulled off one of the greatest Scottish Cup shocks of all time by defeating a star-studded Celtic side that included the likes of Robbie Keane and Aiden McGeady. A wonderful solo effort from Steven Craig put County ahead shortly after half-time, before a volley from Martin Scott guaranteed the Highlanders their place in the final, just 2 minutes before the final whistle.

March 9, 2013 (3-2 win)

3 years later, County recorded their first league win against the Glasgow giants in one of the club’s most famous comebacks. Neil Lennon’s side raced ahead with goals from Charlie Mulgrew and Gary Hooper inside the first 21 minutes. The reigning SPL champions and league leaders, who had just returned from playing Juventus in the Champions League, looked to be too strong for the Staggies in the opening stages. However, Grant Munro got County back into the game after 30 mins and Sam Morrow added a shock equaliser 6 minutes later. After a whirlwind first 45 minutes of football, the match looked as though it had been exhausted of its energy in the second half. But, in the final minute of the match, Steffen Wohlfarth grabbed all three points for the hosts, lifting the ball over Fraser Forster to rightfully reward Ross County for their immense endeavour.

January 31, 2016 (3-1 win)

County defeated Celtic in another semi-final in 2016, knocking out the holders at Hampden in the prequel to one the club’s greatest ever achievements. The Staggies got off to a nightmare start when Gary Mackay-Steven tapped in after just 26 seconds. However, in the 13th minute, Efe Ambrose brought down Alex Schalk in the box, receiving a red card and giving away a penalty in the process. Martin Woods converted the penalty then Paul Quinn put County ahead shortly after half-time. In the 63rd minute, Alex Schalk sealed his side’s spot in the League Cup final when he fired his shot into the top corner. County went onto win the cup, defeating Hibernian in the final!

November 29, 2020 (2-0 win)

Last month, Scottish football fans watched in disbelief as Ross County brought an end to Celtic’s 35-match unbeaten run in domestic cup competitions. Celtic, who had not lost a match in the League Cup since they were foiled by County nearly 5 years prior, were shocked by a special Staggies performance that booked them a place in the Betfred Cup quarterfinals. Ross Stewart won and converted a spot kick in the 39th minute before Alex Iacovitti put the icing on the cake of a fantastic County performance in the 84th minute with a header. The Staggies defended admirably and limited Celtic to few clear chances as the hosts finally lost grip of their stranglehold on domestic trophies in Scotland. We hope for more of the same tomorrow night…
