Over the Years: Hamilton

18/12/2020

County welcome Hamilton Accies to the Global Energy Stadium tomorrow as both sides look to avenge their league defeats from last weekend.

One point currently separates the two clubs, a win for the Staggies would see them leapfrog the visitors.

Both sides have contested some exhilarating fixtures in the past. Let’s take a look at 5 of our favourites…

August 8, 2020 (1-0 win)

On County’s first away match of the season, Stuart Kettlewell’s men ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Billy McKay. McKay’s 76th minute strike raised the Staggies to joint-first position in the league, level on points with Hibernian. The striker poked the ball home from close range, at the second time of asking, when the ball broke to him after Hamilton goalkeeper Ryan Fulton failed to collect a cross from Josh Mullin.

August 3, 2019 (3-0 win)

On the opening day of 2019/20 season, County hammered Hamilton in the Highlands. Joe Chalmers initiated the scoring when he was fantastically assisted by Billy McKay in the 30th minute. The striker then added a goal of his own 6 minutes later, before Ross Stewart sealed the victory shortly after half time. The newly promoted Staggies showed no Scottish Premiership teething problems, brushing relegation rivals Hamilton aside.

May 16, 2017 (3-2 win)

On the penultimate matchday of the 2016/17 season, a dramatic 3-2 win for the Staggies lifted them to a very respectable 7th in the league. The ever-present Michael Gardyne put County ahead after 3 minutes with a perfect curled effort from the edge of the box before Rakesh Bingham replied mid-way though the first half. Although the home side’s second goal went down as an own goal, it was a result of a fine Jim O’Brien strike that cannoned off the post and ricocheted off the legs of Remi Matthews before crossing the line. The visitors must have thought they had been reimbursed for their misfortune just 2 minutes later when substitute David Templeton got the visitors level. However, County’s class prevailed as Jonathan Franks drilled a half-volley from the edge of the box into the bottom corner in the dying embers of the game.

April 28, 2012 (5-1 win)

The Staggies thumped the Accies in 2012 on Scottish First Division Presentation day in 2012. Goals from Colin McMenamin, Michael Gardyne, Richard Brittain and current manager Stuart Kettlewell provided a perfect conclusion to a historic season for the club. County topped the league, losing just one game all season, and gained subsequent promotion to the SPL for the first-time n the club’s history. Nearly 5,000 people watched the Staggies lift the trophy in the Highlands after an afternoon of total dominance: a true reflection of their season as a whole.

August 7, 1999 (2-1 win)

In August 1999, Ross County welcomed Hamilton Accies to the Highlands for the first time in the club’s first ever match in the Scottish Second Division. John McGlashan and Brian Irvine’s goals helped the Staggies to a 2-1 victory on the opening day of a season that saw Neale Cooper’s side clinch a second consecutive promotion.
