Stuart & Laidlaw look to Wednesday

15/12/2020

Stuart Kettlewell and Ross Laidlaw believe that a win in the Betfred Cup on Wednesday can be the ‘catapult’ for County’s season.

Both speaking yesterday morning, the manager and goalkeeper reinforced the importance of Wednesday’s Quarter-Final cup clash against Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena for the team.

The Staggies have been particularly impressive in the competition this year, delivering a shock upset to cup holders Celtic in the round of 16 as well as going undefeated in the group stages and subsequently topping Group D.

Stuart Kettlewell said: “We have to get ourselves back up again, we have to go and look forward to a cup quarter-final and see if that’s the thing that can swing momentum our way.”

“You are just looking for your next game to be the catalyst for some sort of run or any kind of momentum, it just so happens that our next game is in the cup, and obviously our last outing in this competition was a very good one and is something we were hoping was going to give us a real feel-good factor.

“But there’s been some tough games, let’s not kid ourselves. We have to look at this as an opportunity, as will Livingston, you know, they’ll be looking at playing Ross County at home and thinking it’s an opportunity to get to a national trophy semi-final and get to Hampden.

“But that’s something that we have to thrive on, and as I touched on in the Celtic game, we’ve got a decent history in the cup competitions over the last few years and we have to look at this as being something that can catapult us forward and try and give us some sort of momentum in the league campaign.”

County goalkeeper, Ross Laidlaw, also added:

“We know with the fixtures coming up that we’ve got some winnable games coming up, especially at home, we’ve got some teams (that are) kind of around us (in the table) at home. We’re hoping we can take the performances into that and obviously we’ve got a quarter-final in the cup to look forward to, so a couple of wins can change the outlook of the season.

“Obviously we’re looking forward to it, we beat Celtic in the last round so now there’s a chance to get to semi-final at Hampden.

“Especially after a defeat, you want a game soon, right away basically so you can amend what happened at the weekend.

“I think it’s a massive incentive, everyone wants to get to Hampden, it’s a big chance to get there and it’s a great draw for us away at Livingston, it’s a hard game to go to, but we have to go there and believe we can get a result. I don’t think there’s a big difference in quality between both the teams.

“I got to a semi-final with Hibs against Celtic a few years ago, so it’s a great occasion, you get to play in front of 50,000 at Hampden, obviously, we don’t know if there will be fans there but just getting to Hampden is a massive achievement, especially, getting there with a team like Ross County.

“I think it’s a big game, so we’re using it to hopefully kick us on in the league, first and foremost, the league is more important, but we want to go and get a result on Wednesday and hopefully that can take us on in the league and give us some form in the league as well.”
