The Preview: Greenock Morton vs Ross County

26/09/2025

By Ramsay Banks

Ross County are on the road as Tony Docherty’s men head down to Cappielow to face Dougie Imrie’s Greenock Morton.

Both sides are looking for their first league win of the season, with Morton having drawn six of the seven matches they’ve played so far.

Kick-off is at 3pm at Cappielow Park.

Ross County

The Staggies must move quickly to put a run of results together as they look to swiftly move up the table following a slow start to life back in the Championship.

With three points from a possible 21, there are improvements to be made across the board.

On Thursday, Tony Docherty added to his goalkeeping options, securing the signing of Trevor Carson on a season-long loan from Dundee.

We heard from Docherty as the team looks to build up a head of steam on Saturday:

County are coming off the back of a closely-fought 2-1 defeat to Queen’s Park in Dingwall. The Staggies were reduced to ten men as Declan Gallagher was given his marching orders on the hour mark.

A Ronan Hale penalty had the Staggies level going into half time, but going down a man changed the course of the game, and the Spiders netted the winner courtesy of Josh Fowler.

Player to watch: Ronan Hale

Despite County not yet showing their full potential Ronan Hale has continued where he left off as the talismanic figure he has come to be known as.

The striker has three goals to his name in the Championship so far and will be hoping to add to his tally and help the Staggies soar up the rankings.

With Morton having played out so many games to a stalemate this season a player like Hale could prove to be the difference between another draw or a long overdue victory for Ross County.

Greenock Morton

Whether or not you’re happy at the moment, if you were a Greenock Morton fan, depends on whether you’re a glass-half-empty or glass-half-full type of person.

Six draws in seven matches is a record that jumps off the page, even if it results in an unremarkable points tally.

Morton will take the positives in that beating them has proven a near-impossible task for Championship teams, but will look at missed opportunities on certain occasions.

Dougie Imrie will look to make sure his side remains difficult to beat, while adding some wins to their record sooner rather than later.

Player to Watch: Eamonn Brophy

Former Ross County man Eamonn Brophy has adapted well to life at Cappielow and, like Hale, has three goals to his name in the Championship.

Having struggled for game time in Dingwall, the former Scotland international will be looking to prove a point.

His former teammates will be more than aware of how devastating Brophy can be in front of goal, so will be switched on for 90 minutes in their attempts to thwart him.

Familiar faces:

Arron Lyall moved the opposite direction to Brophy in the summer, making the switch from Greenock to Dingwall.

Previous encounters:

The two teams last met in the 2023/24 League Cup group stage, where County ran out 2-1 winners in Dingwall, thanks to goals from Jay Henderson and Simon Murray. The meeting before that came in the Staggies’ last spell in the Championship in 2019 where they beat Morton 2-0 courtesy of Brian Graham and Josh Mullin.

Team news

Noah Chilvers, Andrew Macleod and Josh Reid remain out.

Declan Gallagher is suspended thanks to his red card against Queen’s Park.
