MATCH PREVIEW | Ross County v Aberdeen

01/09/2022

We are back on home turf and back to cinch Premiership action this weekend as we welcome Aberdeen to Dingwall for what guarantees to be an intense clash of the two most northerly top-tier sides.

It was only a few short months ago that victory at Pittodrie would see County pip Aberdeen to a Top Six place in the Premiership and see County claim only their third ever top half finish.

TEAM NEWS

County will continue to be without Alex Samuel & Connor Randall who progress back from long term injuries. George Harmon is currently being assessed by the medical department following his injury against Celtic on Wednesday night.

William Akio returned to the matchday squad in midweek for the Premier Sports Cup clash with Celtic.

Ross Callachan & Jack Baldwin return from their two-match suspensions while Yan Dhanda also returns to the squad after facing suspension in midweek for the League Cup tie with Celtic.

LAST SEASON

Last season saw County go undefeated against Aberdeen in three pulsating Premiership ties.

An early season meeting at Pittodrie ended in a 1-1 draw with Regan Charles-Cook’s 1st half goal looking to have won the match for Malky Mackay’s side before Christian Ramirez snatched a late equaliser to earn a share of the spoils.

A midweek meeting in early 2022 would also see the points shared. Jonny Hayes opened the scoring for Aberdeen in the early throws of the second half. However, Ross Callachan’s superbly taken half-volley just moments later was the perfect reply and earned what would turnout to be a crucial point for County as they began to look up the table towards the top half.

The final meeting of the campaign would be one to remember for everybody of a Ross County persuasion. With several teams vying to clinch a place in the Top Six, a late Joseph Hungbo penalty saw County take the three points and ultimately claim sixth position in the league table.

THIS OPPOSITION

Aberdeen couldn’t have imagined a harder start to the season than visiting League Champions Celtic on Flag Day. The Don’s would eventually lose out 2-0 but bounced back emphatically, beating St Mirren 4-1 at Pittodrie on Matchday 2, with former Aberdeen defender Declan Gallagher sent off for the Buddies early in the match.

Jim Goodwin’s side are currently on a three-match winning streak after Premiership wins over St Johnstone & Livingston were added to by a 4-1 extra time win over Annan Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup on Tuesday night.

It has been a busy summer at Pittodrie with 11 players joining the club and a host of regulars leaving the club. The arrivals have included striker Bojan Miovski who has already registered 6 goals, along with new Captain Anthony Stewart who joined from Wycombe Wanderers. Kelle Roos joined from Derby County and Jayden Richardson joined from recently promoted Nottingham Forrest.

Amongst the departures were mainstay midfielder Lewis Ferguson who headed for Bologna and Academy Graduate Calvin Ramsay, who joined Premier League side Liverpool. Long-serving defender Andrew Considine left for St Johnstone, whilst Declan Gallagher also left to join St Mirren.
